September 19, 2011 Saving Pelican 895
During the Gulf oil spill of 2010, brown
pelicans were among the most prominent of the avian casualties. Volunteers
worked alongside wildlife officials to rescue and rehabilitate pelicans that had
come into contact with the oil. HBO Documentary Films produced a short video
that chronicles the efforts to save one particular pelican. Known as “Pelican
895” because of the number that wildlife officials assigned to him, Saving
Pelican 895 follows rescue workers as they capture, clean, hand-feed, and
eventually release this bird back to the wild.
