September 19, 2011 Saving Pelican 895

During the Gulf oil spill of 2010, brown pelicans were among the most prominent of the avian casualties. Volunteers worked alongside wildlife officials to rescue and rehabilitate pelicans that had come into contact with the oil. HBO Documentary Films produced a short video that chronicles the efforts to save one particular pelican. Known as “Pelican 895” because of the number that wildlife officials assigned to him, Saving Pelican 895 follows rescue workers as they capture, clean, hand-feed, and eventually release this bird back to the wild.

Presenter: Sharon Telesky, Penn State Master Gardeners

Sharon Telesky from the Master Gardeners of Penn State will helps us to understand the role of bees in our gardens. Why are bees so valuable? For thousands of years, people have had an adversarial relationship with bees, because they sting. But over 90 different crops depend on honeybees for pollination services. Sharon will help us consider the needs of native bees in our gardens, as these insects provide a wealth of value.
